Designing Cascade Heights

When we talk about design, we’re not merely describing a loose arrangement of people, things, and places. We’re talking about intentionally shaping the way we want to live our lives.

Our design is a reflection of who we are and want to become. Our design elevates our treasured natural assets – our lush tree canopy and greenspaces – and connects these elements to the heart of our commercial district to become Atlanta’s community in a park. At the same time, our design identifies opportunities for new growth that are designed to accommodate both existing and future residents of all races, ages, and income levels. This new growth and development, exceptionally designed, is viewed as a complement to our natural assets, not a competitor with it.

Similar to City Design, our design work is driven by two fundamental questions:

What is Cascade Heights’ DNA?

How do we design a Cascade Heights for everyone?

As we continue to build upon this work, we’ve organized this work into three main strategies:

We’re designing a better interaction between the streets of our major corridors, residential neighborhoods and our natural amenities. The connection between these two elements is important to us. Improving the connections to these spaces provides greater access for existing residents, improves their value as amenities to future potential development, and reinforces the role they place in our identity as an urban greenspace district. Our goal is to elevate our nature spaces as some of the most memorable in Atlanta.

We’re significantly improving the design of our public realm to support the life of our commercial district. Our design for public life begins with the design of our connecting streets to serve the needs of pedestrians, bicyclists, and transit-users in addition to cars. Improving the design of these streets improves access to the commercial district and ultimately the district itself. Our design also includes other critical elements in our commercial district such as building facades and parking lots. The thoughtful design of these pieces is common to the most successful commercial districts throughout the city; the Cascade Heights Commercial District will become one of the best. We’re strategically designing for pockets of new growth and making sure these are compatible with the way we want to live. The greatest opportunities for new growth are those that include new housing types and options that accommodate both existing and future residents of all races, ages, and income levels, resulting in a sustainable, multi-generational Cascade Heights. By focusing this growth in the right places, we can accomplish the dual tasks of creating the density necessary to ensure a vibrant, successful commercial district and protecting our natural amenities for the generations to come.
